Parking app not working — still got a charge?

If a parking app failed and you still received a charge, appeal with screenshots of errors, the time and date, the registration entered, and any bank authorisation — request operator app logs for the same window.

Appeal when RingGo, PayByPhone, operator apps or APCOA Flow failed during payment and you received a private parking charge.

You opened RingGo, PayByPhone or an operator app, selected the site, tapped pay — then the spinner hung, the session vanished, or confirmation never arrived. ANPR still logged your exit and the charge followed. Document the technical failure with timestamps, not just frustration.

Screenshots worth saving immediately

  • Error message with phone time visible in the status bar
  • Site selected and registration entered before the failure
  • Bank app showing a pending or failed authorisation
  • A later successful payment if you retried in the same visit
  • Operator app chat or support ticket reference
  • Wi-Fi or signal note if connectivity caused failure — weaker alone

Common app failure patterns

  1. 1
    Spinner then nothing

Screenshot the frozen screen; check bank for pending charge; appeal with both.

  2. 2
    Confirmation never emailed

Show in-app history and bank line; ask operator to check merchant reconciliation.

  3. 3
    Paid wrong site in app

Different ground — show correct site selected if that was the error.

Records to request from the operator

Ask for app payment logs, ANPR entry and exit times, and whether their merchant received a payment attempt. Independent adjudicators may weigh attempted payment if logs show a failed session at the relevant time.

Smart Parking sites have no machine — does this still apply?

Yes — portal and app failures are common Smart Parking grounds. See our Smart Parking appeal page for site context.

Should I pay and claim a refund?

Paying may close appeal rights. Appeal the charge with failure proof unless the operator confirms a refund route.

I have no screenshot — can I still appeal?

Harder. Bank pending lines, app chat logs or witness statements help. Always screenshot failures on the spot in future.
