Operators and appeals
How to appeal a Smart Parking charge
Appeal a Smart Parking charge through the portal on your notice — these are camera-only sites with no pay machines, so your case should focus on ANPR timing, registration reads, signage at the entrance you used, and any payment made via their app or website.
Smart Parking UK appeal guide for ANPR-only retail and leisure sites — no ticket machines, portal payment, signage and registration disputes.
Smart Parking UK runs camera-only car parks at retail parks, supermarkets and leisure sites. There is typically no ticket machine — you pay via app, website or phone after seeing signs, or you rely on a advertised free period. Most disputes are about whether signs were visible at your entrance, whether the plate was read correctly, or whether payment was registered before the ANPR exit event.
What makes Smart Parking different
- No physical pay machine at many sites — 'I paid at the machine' rarely applies
- Charges are triggered purely by ANPR entry and exit times
- Free parking periods (e.g. 2 hours) must be clearly signed at each entrance
- Payment is often retrospective via Smart Parking's online portal
Evidence for Smart Parking appeals
- Wide and close-up photos of signs at the entrance you actually used
- Screenshot of portal or app payment with reference, plate and timestamp
- Bank notification matching payment time to your stay
- Request for ANPR images if plate read or timing is wrong
- Proof of blue badge, tenant permit or retailer validation if applicable
Grounds that work at ANPR-only sites
- Free period sign missing or obscured at your entrance
- Maximum stay sign not visible before you parked
- Wrong registration captured — compare ANPR image to your plate
- Paid within grace period but system did not reconcile
- Site layout meant you never drove past a compliant sign
After Smart Parking rejects
Smart Parking is a BPA member — rejected appeals usually go to POPLA. Your POPLA case should index signage photos and ANPR timing separately; see our ParkingEye POPLA guide for independent-stage structure (process is the same even though the operator differs).
Common questions
There was no machine — how do I prove I paid?
Use portal payment confirmation, app screenshot or card notification with time and amount. Explain payment method — Smart Parking sites rarely have on-site machines.
Smart Parking vs ParkingEye — same appeal?
Process is similar (ANPR, private land) but use the portal and reference on your notice. Do not send a ParkingEye appeal to Smart Parking.
Can I appeal if I stayed under the free time?
Yes — request entry and exit timestamps and compare to the signed free period at your entrance. Attach photos of that sign.
